MUNICIPALITY VLASENICA

History
According to reliable sources, the area encompassed by the Vlasenica municipality has been populated since the pre-historic times. Many archeological findings and remains of the necropolis (71), medieval tombstones -stećci (total of 1595, 65 with relief carvings and one with epitaph) remains of the old settlements and ancient roads found in the localities of Sosari (today in Milici Municipality), Crkvina in the villages of Vukąići and Gornji Zalukovik confirmed this. In the small village of Cikote, on the right bank of the Drinjača river, on the hill called Rudiste, there are ruins of the miners dwelling, and in its vicinity, in the Varoąiąte and Haniąte locations, remains of the medieval settlement. Out of several explanations related to the origin of the name of Vlasenica, often mentioned is one deriving it from the local word vlasulja for local grass variety: and the other one connecting it to the early inhabitants of the area - Vlachs.

The municipality of Vlasenica is located in the eastern part of RS, on the northern hills of Javor mountain, in the forest uplands rich with water flows. As a part of the sub-region called Birač, it belongs to Sarajevo-Zvornik region and mid Podrinje region. The area altitude interval is from 200 to 1400 meters above the sea level. The area belongs to the Drina river drainage basin, with the sharp continental climate and windy springs and autumns when the cold air masses from Javor mountain mix with the somewhat warmer air masses moving along the valleys of local Drinjača, Tiąča and Jadar rivers.

Constitution of Milici municipality decreased the area covered by the Vlasenica municipality from 532 km2 to present 234km2.Vlasenica has been important traffic intersection throughout its history: it is located on the main road Belgrade - Sarajevo, Novi Sad - Sarajevo and at the intersection of the regional roads connecting Han-Pijesak and ©ekovići with Tuzla and Zvornik.

In this sense, the most important fact is the hydro-energy potential of the Dina river of 11,8 billions KVH /year. Electricity network

Also, there are two operational and functional mini hidropower plants in the municipality: HPP Tiąča and HPP Gornji Zalukovik, parts of the RS electrical system.
Spatial and urban development plans:Decision related to the Spatial plan 2000 - 2020, adopted, as well as decision on Revision and Update of the current Urban Development Plan. The current urban development plan envisaged the preparation of industrial zone covering 43,56 ha and SMEs zone of 3,25 ha. Regulatory plans for these zones have not been prepared yet. Outside the urban area, regulatory plan for the sports and recreational center Igriąte has been prepared.
